Ludd *L*...the Smiths!! Good lord that takes me back to my wild youth! I have the album "Hatful of Hollow". I'm afraid it never really got a lot of play in the end. I only bought it for one song "How soon is now" *L* Maybe I chose the wrong album...what would you recommend?

I much preferred "The Church" album, "Of skins and hearts"...and it still gets good play.

For a moment we're strangers.
The Unguarded Moment.
Memories in Future Tense.
Is this where you live?
She Never Said.
Don't open the Door to Strangers.

Also, did you ever hear the band "Magazine" featuring Howard Devoto on vocals? The album Real Life is brilliant. I think I've mentioned the song here before..."The Light Pours Out of Me" is particularly good.

*threads safety pins through ears...pulls out torn and cut T-shirt and black miniskirt and purple tights, black hobnail boots. wanders off down memory lane awhile...*

Speaking of The Smiths.
In one sense, a tale of Irish emigration. Morrissey, Johnny Marr and Mike Joyce were the offspring of parents born and educated in Eire. Andy Rourke's father was also of Irish ancestry.

The Irish link in the Smiths' story was always underplayed, for Morrissey chose the language and imagery from Northern England as his theme.

Yet, for all that, there was something Irish about the group. It was their humour, their melody lines, their gang mentality and the sense of longing in their music.

Orin what did you make of the Observer top 100 British albums of all time...Stone Roses no 1???????

Can't fault it. There isn't a dodgy track on the whole album.

I'd say the musical aspect wasn't the only deciding factor though.
It did inspire a whole generation, and more importantly taught a whole generation of blokes how to dance!
