Just a little note to say "Hi!" to all those I miss on my increasing limited time on line. (Thanks to school.) Can anybody understand the original text of Canterbury Tales? I mean the Middle English (foriegn language like) text. The professor gave me extra points for figuring out that Gaelic and Old English come from the same base language, but it doesn't help reading Chaucer. Oh well.

CALL FOR HELP WITH MY HOMEWORK!!!!

I'm taking a course in folk lore and have gotten permission to do my project on how people with different backgrounds, but common ancestory, can share a common lore. Basically what I need are stories, ancedotes, superstitions, etc about or from the Ancient Celts, Irish and Ireland, can be contemporary or not, where and how you first heard the story, and what it means to you (helps in the analytical process). You can either post on here or send to my e-mail katerra@hotmail.com.

Hey, I may even start up a new conversation, so we can continue collecting the stories after I'm done with the project. What do you think Acc?

Thanks for the help!

Top of pagePrevious messageNext messageBottom of pageLink to this message  By Accasbel on Thursday, February 4, 1999 - 06:29 am:

That could be interestinh Katerra.
If you start a new conversastion in the Folklore/Mythology section, we can build on it.
During Febrary, I intend expanding the Tir content.
In addition to people entering stories or summaries, links to stories on the Web could be listed and commented on.

I raise my wee jameson's filled thimble and make toast to the namesake of this day. Saint Patrick was honored and revered for his devotion to Christianity and mankind. In it's wake he denied those who were bonded with the earthen beliefs and would not convert. Yet, through his trials and ventures, he was inspired by the Celtic Bard, Caoilte's legends and stories. In such inspiration he ordered them inscribed for all to see. For seeing, understanding, and sharing his enlightenment, and for his life of devotion,(in his own ways) to mankind...I drink cheers on this day named in honor of him, upon his death of March 17th, 455 A.D.
To you Saint Patrick....Slainte!!!

There may be information here that would be new to some Patrick fans.

By-the-by, the writer (Dr Mainchín Seoighe, "An Mangaire Súgach") has a fairly regular column in the web edition.
He's very knowledable on local history, etc.

Hey all. Just a reminder about my folklore paper I'm doing. Got three and half weeks until it's due. For those who aren't sure what I'm needing, just check out the "Folklore of Tir" under the Myth/Folklore section of the message and see Cao's stories or check out my site http://home.att.net/~depwah/ and see the other paper I did for this class called "Conforming the Non-Conformist". I'd like to schedule ICQ interviews for all those who wish to help. Just e-mail at katerra@hotmail.com. Thanks again to everyone. And for those who tolerate my gripes about school, it's almost over just six more weeks!!!! :o)

SPECIAL ANNOUNCEMENT: The folklore paper is over. It will be turned in Tuesday, April 27th.

EXTRA SPECIAL ANNOUNCEMENT: Yours truly, namely me, has been accepted to the Musical Theatre Collaboration Project being sponsored by the university. They only accepted 8 people. I'm the producer of the production. Also, seeing how many people would be interested in organizing a mini-gathering around that time. We can go to the performance and then celebrate at the local Irish pub afterward. And as an added bonus, you all can meet vic and throw darts at the MOEOO. :o)

Well, the plays are over. And despite losing three actors and a director two weeks before the technical runs, they came out great. My second one, based on the Spanish novella The Three Cornered Hat, received a standing ovation. I wish I could say it was because of my expert leadership, but I think it had more to do with the excellent script and strong female lead who has a voice like an opera singer. They asked me to come back and do it again next year; and in a moment of insanity, I agreed. *pours a double whatchamacallit* All in all, it was a great learning experience and the most rewarding thing I've done. :o) And if I can figure out how to download individual frames from video to the computer, I'll post some of the pictures for everyone.

Three actors AND a director? The last play I was in we only lost one actor (although, admittedly, he was the lead actor) and we were able to persuade the director to take the part in the end.

Top of pagePrevious messageNext messageBottom of pageLink to this message  By Katerra on Thursday, December 9, 1999 - 05:12 am:

All mine were chorus or minor roles, but I found those are harder to fill at the last minute because almost no one wanted a small part. The director was an easy replacement. We had a new director within six hours. But despite it all, it was an incredible experience

I have a question for anyone who can think of a reasonable answer. I installed a filter on my computer so the kids couldn't "accidently" pull any questionable stuff on screen. We tried to get into Tir afterwards, and it was blocked. Is there something on this site I am not aware of?!?! lol Obviously, I removed the filter--the Tir is too important to this family!

Top of pagePrevious messageNext messageBottom of pageLink to this message  By Suzycat on Thursday, December 9, 1999 - 09:17 pm:

That is bizarre. Maybe it's because it has a chat-room for adults (gasp, shock!!!)? It's a shame the word "adult" has developed such unpleasant connotations. And unfortunately many chat-rooms are, shall we say, unsuitable for kids.

Top of pagePrevious messageNext messageBottom of pageLink to this message  By Accasbel on Friday, December 10, 1999 - 07:30 am:

Which filter ?

Some filters can truely be 'bizarre'.
It may be that robot software crawled the pages and decided that (part) of some word matched a hit-list of no-no's.
Or maybe a human decided that any chat room or message board not specifically designated as being moderated for kid-friendly was off-limits.
Maybe the filter software looks for a rating system declared in the source of the pages.

Filters are always going to be inexact. Parental control and education are the long-term answers.

I agree with you Accasbel, however the kids can accidently trip (innocently) across some junk while they are looking for something normal. It has happened here more than once, which is why we had a filter to begin with. Having said that, I am amazed at what the filters keep out (nice normal(?) pubs, etc)! We have had the filter removed until they can update it, which they are working on as we speak. If it happens again, that's the end of paying for a filter, and we shall just have to live with the consequences.
I appreciate your answer Accasbel, I didn't mean for the question to be taken as a criticism of this quite enjoyable site!!! *S*

Just a quick notice to Lacie and others that another person using the "Celt" nick has been about...the Oct 11th posting was not me,the Celt of illuminated calligraphy persuasion, although I do agree with the "lei" comment...heh-heh.
In looking this section over, I find that for a title like "Life, the Universe and Everything", there are remarkably few postings on that subject.
We could use a little deep philosophy in here...how bout some responses to the following query: From whence do we derive meaning in our lives? From within, from without, from others, etc? Or is there really such a thing as objective meaning? Does it exists "out there", or do we create our own meaning?
I'd be interested to hear what the Tir folks have to say on this subject...slan, all!!!

How quick we are to see offence *sigh*

It may well be the the anon guestmeant something that the words (in the original piece) did not.

The words are taken from an amusing (if you have a quirky sense of humour) parody on Desiderata.
"Go gently .....You are a child of the Universe ....."

It's about the same thing as the parodies on "Ladie and Gentlemen of the class of ... Wear sunscreen"

If the guest offered it in humour, then it perhaps backfired.
IF it was meant unkindly, then the lack of originality and imagination of the insult simply backfires on the insulter.

RELAX !

Top of pagePrevious messageNext messageBottom of pageLink to this message  By Accasbel on Tuesday, January 4, 2000 - 06:49 pm:

Go placidly amid the noise & haste, & remember what peace there may be in silence. As far as possible without surrender be on good terms with all persons. Speak your truth quietly & clearly; and listen to others, even the dull and ignorant; they too have their story.

Avoid loud and aggressive persons, they are vexatious to the spirit. If you compare yourself with others, you may become vain & bitter; for always there will be greater and lesser persons than yourself. Enjoy your achievements, as well as your plans.

Keep interested in your own career, however humble; it is a real possession in the changing fortunes of time. Exercise caution in your business affairs; for the world is full of trickery. But let this not blind you to what virtue there is; many persons strive for high ideals; and everywhere life is full of heroism.
Be yourself. Especially do not feign affection. Neither be cynical about love; for in the face of all aridity & disenchantment it is as perennial as the grass.

Take kindly the counsel of years, gracefully surrendering the things of youth. Nurture strength of spirit to shield you in sudden misfortune. But do not distress yourself with imaginings. Many fears are born of fatigue & loneliness. Beyond a wholesome discipline, be gentle with yourself.

You are a child of the universe, no less than the trees & the stars; you have a right to be here. And whether or not it is clear to you, no doubt the universe is unfolding as it should.

Therefore be at peace with God, whatever you conceive Him to be, and whatever your labours & aspirations, in the noisy confusion of life keep pace with your soul.

With all its sham, drudgery & broken dreams, it is still a beautiful world. Be careful, Strive to be happy.

Ramblings from Y Canu Bleidd (in his own mad mind, he's in love with you...now what yer gonna do?):
If a fly doesn't have wings, is it a crawl?
What about rain dance practice? If you practice and the rain comes, why bother practicing? And if it doesn't, why bother with a rain dance at all?
What would you add to dehydrated water?
If a tree falls in the forest and no one is there to hear it, and it hits a mime, does anyone care?
These are things I think about when I'm at home alone and the power goes out.

That comment about being "in his own mad mind, he's in love with you" was a sort of ripoff from the old Cream song "Strange Brew." To wit: "She's a witch of trouble in electric blue/In her own mad mind, she's in love with you/With you...now what yer gonna do?/Strange brew, kill what's inside of you..."
Yes, the universe laughs at you, but as for space, it does not feel, it does not die, space offers neither truth nor lie.
Or think you on this:
"Lime and limpid green, the second scene/The fight's between the blue you once knew/Floating down the sound resounds around the icy water underground/Jupiter and Saturn/Oberon, Miranda and Titanian/Neptune, Titan, stars can frighten..."

What is the shape of the Universe? What is the sound of the Universe? Where are we in this Island Universe?.....

Top of pagePrevious messageNext messageBottom of pageLink to this message  By Shae on Saturday, February 3, 2001 - 08:46 pm:

Last I heard, the Universe is shaped like a simple horse saddle. Honestly.

The sound of the Universe was detected about 15-20 years ago. The discovery gave much support to the Big Bang Theory. It's a very low frequency radio wave that seems to come from everywhere in the Universe.

Island Universe? It's a contradiction in terms. "Island" implies that this Universe is one on the periphery of the main Universe. "Universe" encompases everyting, so there can't be an Island Universe.

Our Solar System is in the Milky Way Galaxy, which is spiral galaxy, and we are located in one of the outer arms of the spiral.

Ignore that body.

Top of pagePrevious messageNext messageBottom of pageLink to this message  By Shae on Sunday, February 4, 2001 - 12:48 am:

The reality of the body of opinion has yet to be established with reliability in early Irish law. I, along with some learned colleagues at the University of Clare, (aka The Honk Bar at the end of the runway at Shannon Airport) have been debating this very topic in between landings and take-offs, rugger games between Munster and the rest of the Universe, and helping the kids with their homework. We have yet to arrive at a definitive definition. We expect to have a solution yesterday, or soon thereafter.

I must take exception to your use of the phrase 'pear shaped.' In our Universally Politically Correct Universe (UPCU) you demonstrate blatent discrimination against apples, tomatoes and gooseberries. Not to mention courgettes! (known as zucchinis in the colonies). Why can't the Universe be courgette shaped? What justification do you have for selecting pears? Is it just that you have a fetish for pears? How many pears gave you a brown envelope? How many pears bribed you to get them an Irish passport? Are you an illegal pear smuggler?

Having established that early Irish law hasn't been established with reliability, whoever she is, how can you justify your dictum that "that body" should be ignored? Please support your thesis with appropriate feetnotes

Top of pagePrevious messageNext messageBottom of pageLink to this message  By Shae on Sunday, February 4, 2001 - 10:30 pm:

I've dared and gone where no millipede would go. Despite their agility and dexterity, resultant on their multisegmented anatomy, each segment bearing a pair of ambulatory appendages apart from one or two at the anterior end where the brain resides according to those of anthropomorphic persuasion, even millipedes would be unable to traverse a pear-shaped world. Since their ambulatory appendages are equally efficient in both sinister and dexter modes, they would not be able to cope with the geometric complexities of a pear-shaped world and would simply fall off onto the tortoise.

The world is divided into Creationists and Evolutionists, and ne'er the twain shall meet. No doubt each will be able to explain the following indisputably proven fact in their own way. Haggis is a delicacy in Scotland because Scotish men have hairy legs. The reason Haggis is a delicacy in Scotland is because only the Scots have discovered how to capture them. You see, unlike millipedes, who have both ambulatory appendages the same length so they keep on falling off pear-shaped objects onto the tortoise, haggis' have a sinistral ambulatory appendage that is shorter than the dextral partner. Thus, they can live on mountains and browse on their favourite shrubs that have been declared endangered species without falling off. However, because their sinistral appendage is shorter than their dextral, they must move counterclockwise (widdershins in the old way) around the mountain as they browse. The canny Scots observed this behavioural attribute while contemplating if underwear should be worn under kilts when it was cold out. They finally decided it was warmer in and concentrated their efforts on how to snare the haggis. Infernal demons that they are, they realised that they could use the haggis' asymetric symmetry to their advantage. If they could chase the haggis' clockwise around the mountain (antiwidershins in the old way), the haggis' would lose their footing and roll down the mountain and off the edge of the world onto the tortoise. Canny as ever, the Scots devised a demonic device. A net!! As the haggis' were about to fall off the world onto the tortoise who, btw, was getting a bit miffed at being used as a waste disposal system, the canny Scots would catch them in the NET! And cook them! Disproportionate legs and all!

Early Irish Law states that only those with nets approved by the Central Fishery and Haggis Board were entitled to snare haggis' and mermaids. So it must be true.

Being serious for a moment, Monadh makes a good point. What is a Universe? Scientists define the term as "all," or "everything." So, there can't be island universes because they are part of the UNIVERSE. However, we each live in our own universe. Some are small, others a little bigger. When a half-pint glass is full, it's full and can't hold any more. When a pint glass is full, it's full too. Both are equally filled. It doesn't matter that one is bigger than the other. When they're filled to capacity with love, joy and happiness, they are both equally fulfilled.

Help - What do you think of this, mythology experts out there?
Please send me your thoughts on the soundness of the following information (and especially the spellings of the names) that I got from the ecauldron.com index of Irish mythological characters:

Manannan - (Mananuan) son of Lir, a chief of the Tuatha de Danaan who was greater even than their king, Nuada. His sons are Donall Donn-Ruadh, Sgoith Gleigeil, Goitne Gorm-Shuileach, and Sine Sindearg. Manannan understtod all enchantments, so the Tuatha de Danaan left it to him to find places for them where they would be safe from their enemies. He chose the most beautiful hills and valleys of Ireland and put hidden walls about them. He helped Angus to get the Brugh na Boinne away from the Dagda by trickery. Aine may have been his daughter. Some say he was killed by Uillenn Faebarderg in battle at Magh Cuilenn. He raised Deirdre's children, taught Diarmuid the use of weapons, taught Cuchulain the use of the Gae Bulg. Some say he was Deirdre's father and a shape-changer, and was Culain, the Smith. He was the major sea god, ruling Tir Tairngiri. His wife was Fand.

All comments appreciated. Thanks.

Top of pagePrevious messageNext messageBottom of pageLink to this message  By Daryl on Friday, March 2, 2001 - 05:37 pm:

Áine was also known to be his wife who was also married (at the same time) to Echdae the Sky Horse God. He was most commonly associalted with The Isle of Man, and legends say that he was the one who decreed that the land of the Fey and the land of Humans should always be seperate. (This was instigated by Fand falling in love with CuChulain)

His sword was known as the Retaliator and it would never miss its mark. He did not leave his home in the sea, the fabled kingdom of Elysium, to help the Tuatha Dé Dannan in their land battles.

Anyone who attended (and ate the food at)his Feast of the Age held once every thirty three years, would never grow old.

It is noted in my resources that numerous stories about him conflict with each other. I suppose that since he was the patron diety of sailors, that would be expected, since tales of him would be tainted by each crews'own experiences with him.

Manannán is an enigmatic figure in Irish mythology and, as Daryl says, there are conflicting stories about him. Probably one of the best images of him is given in the 'Voyage of Bran.' Bran is on an Imram to the Otherworld in his boat when he sees a man in a chariot coming towards him over the sea. Bran sees a clear sea while Manannán sees a flowery plain. 'Sea horses glisten in summer as far as Bran's eye can stretch; flowers pour forth a stream on honey in the land of Manannán son of Lir.'

Apart from his traditional home on the Isle of Man he is also associated with the Otherworld island, Emhain Abhlach, 'Emhain of the apple-trees,' which has been connected to Avalon in the Arthurian stories. There is much evidence to suggest that Manannán Mac Lir (Irish) and Manawydan fab Llyr (Welsh) were the same divinity.

Thanks Daryl and Shae
Sounds like you'd not put a great deal of store in the eCauldron reference material then? Aside from the spelling, the extract I asked about seems to be a little off track, even within the scope of conflicting stories. Would you agree? For example, the statement that he was a chief of the Tuatha Dé Dannan seems unlikely in the light of what you guys are saying - a sea deity based in the Isle of Man (even if only for tax purposes) who didn't help the Tuatha with their land battles. What about the names of his sons? Do these sound right to you? Donall Donn-Ruadh for eg?
BTW, can you suggest other references that you find reliable or at least reasonably consistent in these matters?
Thanks

Here’s a few more bits about Manannán. Yes his wife was Fand, the same one who fell in love with CuChulainn and his love for her caused his ‘wasting sickness’ that wasn’t cured until both were given a potion of forgetfulness. Manannán is usually described as wearing a green cloak that seemed to change colour depending on how the light caught it. This feature is sometimes associated with poets and druids who wore a cloak that was at least partially covered with iridescent bird feathers such as those from the mallard. He was known as a shape-changer and trickster. He appeared to the wife of Fiachna Lurgan when Fiachna was away at war in Scotland and told her that Fiachna would die the next morning unless she bore him (Manannán) a son. Fiachna’s wife agreed, Fiachna was saved through the intervention of Manannán and the boy was named Mongan. As a sea-god, Manannán could create storms to wreck invading ships. Although he didn’t participate in the battle against the Fomorians, he gave Lugh magical gifts that would help him and Nuada in the fight.

As for further sources, I’d suggest the following translations from Irish:

"Ancient Irish Tales" by Tom Cross and Pete Slover, and "Ancient Celtic Romances" by P.W. Joyce. They should be readily available.

I was sent this by a friend ... i wanted to share it. Throw away the crap, keep what means something to You! (my fav is #1!!)

10 Things to live by.

1. Disregard all nonessential numbers. These include age, weight and height.
2. Keep only cheerful friends. The grouches pull you down. If you really need a grouch, there are probably family members that fill that need.

3. Keep learning. Learn more about the computer, crafts, gardening, whatever. Just never let the brain idle.
4. Enjoy the simple things. Remember - when you were young, that's all you could afford. When you were in college, that's all that you could afford. When you are on retirement, that's all that you can afford!
5. Laugh often, long and loud. Laugh until you gasp for breath. Laugh so much that you can be tracked anywhere by your distinctive laughter.

6. The tears happen. Endure, grieve, and move on. The only person who is with us our entire life is ourselves.

7. Surround yourself with what you love, whether it is family, pets, keepsakes, music, plants, hobbies, what ever. Your home is your refuge.

8. Cherish your health. If it is good, preserve it. If it is unstable, improve it. If it is beyond what you can improve, get help.

9. Don't take guilt trips. Go to the mall, the next county, a foreign country, but forget the guilt trips!

10. At every opportunity, tell the people you love that you love them.

Remember: Life is not measured by the number of breaths we take, but by the moments that take our breath away

On a happier note:

Just got back from a sneak preview of this indie movie 'The Station Agent', and I've got to say...if you love quiet, character-driven, leaves-you-smiling-a-mile-wide, saying 'no, that can't be the end! I want more!' movies...then see this! Hi-larious, sweet, heartbreaking...fantastic!! The synopsis sounds bizarre 'a introverted dwarf inherits a train depot', but believe me...if you loved 'Local Hero', or 'Waking Ned Devine' or any movies like that, you will love this one.

:)

Oh, says that it opens 11/21...this Friday.

And it starts slow, but believe me...stay with it!

Good luck, GW.

A very interesting story came out as best as I can tell on 6 May 2004, but was not picked up by the newswires until today. It involves Antarctica and the collapsed ice shelf. Many people pointed to the ice shelf’s rapid collapse and said that it was a sign that global warming was increasing rapidly. Now I firmly believe that we as a people, are responsible for the planet, and its well being, but I wondered how global warming of a few degrees, could cause the collapse of a major ice shelf. It didn't.

An unknown volcano was discovered in Antarctic Sound, (the location of the collapsed ice shelf) by researchers studying the ice shelf. It is 700 meters high, and has recently had lava flows. This is known by the presence of fresh basalt rock, which would be quickly converted by the seawater.

My professors in college always told me to look for the most likely cause of a problem first. An ice shelf breaks up after millennia of existence. The air above has risen a few degrees, but is still way below freezing, but below the shelf, a volcano is spewing molten lava into the ocean.

The fight against global warming is not helped by claiming it as a cause where other causes that seem more obvious are at work. According to several reports I have read, the likely presence of a volcano was indicated by various indicators, two years ago, and mariners have noted a difference in the water's color for many years in the area, which is an indicator of volcanic activity.

This will be used by the industrialists with no moral compass to derail environmental/conservation efforts. I am a conservationist, and I think that those who claimed global warming was the most likely cause of the ice shelf collapsing, should explain why they did not say that volcanic activity in the area was (or possibly should be) suspected. In their efforts to help the environment, they may well have helped those who would destroy it.

Memorial Day, a time to remember those worldwide who gave their lives for the cause of freedom.

In the UNITED States it is an election year. What some may not realize is that both candidates are descended from common ancestry. Strange relations?

Edmund Reade (1563-1623) and Elizabeth Cooke (bef 1578-abt 1637) are the common ancestors of George Walker Bush (13th generation) and John Forbes Kerry (10th generation). (Ancestry.com for this information)

Let's not forget to remain UNITED when voting and supporting the leadership of our country. There was a time where brother fought against brother and a nation divided against itself is not a strong nation.

Remember why we are free to vote and to speak out. Remember the blood that has been spilled throughout time, in every war. Remember that in reality, we are all brothers and sisters with a common lineage to our creator.

May your hearts be filled with Peace when outwardly the world is in confusion.

yes there is a conspiricy theory going about that from the 21st of june- the 26th we will be bonbarded by meteorites. one has already hit a house in auckland NZ (it is aparently a georgious periodot stone embeded in the outer general meteorite stone.) and a house sized one hit in Aussie, but exploded on impact. all this just a week or so ago. Oddly enough my military minded bro has told me that all of the navel capability of america has been sent out to sea. everything that could float has been sent out. only those left in dry dock are left.

A communication was intercepted that confirmed this, but i have no notion if this part is true. the offical story is that the navy is on manuvers, and on some sort of war game thingy. we shall see. so if anyone is alive after the 26th gis us a note.
