Holy Mary Mother of Jesus! :O

That is one funky place! It's gonna take a number of hours sussing out how the whole thing works! I can't even get my body to move yet, let alone get some decent clothes on! *L*

I can see I'm going to be stuck on Orientation Island a while!

I'd better get back to work...this could use up a great many 'real' hours!

Hey Silk, The Lad and I found our way to the Tir world, it's a trip....ha

To be honest, I had more fun playing dress up with my character than flopping around the pool...

Woe is me.....
I am lost and wandering in the Land of Second Life...
and the administrators of the system where I am staying keep booting me out for hogging the bandwith.
I am making my way back to Noggian but it may take me a wee while

WenchLad!? You didn't leave Wun out there in the Second Life wilderness to get kicked, pushed or propositioned by some passing idiot did you?

As for you Mr McGuire, I'd be wary of letting your log past my door too! *L*

To you all...Heed The Accasabelic one's warning....stay on Orientation Island until you've done a few miles there, or else, yes, you will be lost in the wilderness! *LOL*

Strangely enough, one might get propositioned more on Orientation Island than in-world. :)
- Bets are off of course if you go to one of the 'popular' pick-up eh.. social interaction .... interaction ... places.
Male and female can wander the lands in general with no hassle - and most greetings are pure friendly.

But large groups of newbies (of the unthinking kind) ..... always disturbances. They don't know how to control either their avatars or their mouths. *sigh*

For the most part, the place is wonderful.

Mac .. the system is having growing pains.
Sure you got the right password? LOL!

- but the database load for each person logging on is significant. Links set up for all their friends, their inventory, notification to and from online friends, pick up any IM's of you're not routing them to email. And then, uploading the thousands of prims making up the surrounding sims wherever the Avatar is arriving.
I think they throttle the rate of logins at peak times. I've seen delays for myself, but it's not happened more than 4 or 5 in the last month or so.

What's all the fuss about????... I've been sitting by the pool for days now and none of the Noggians have showed up!!

Think it's time to turn over and sunbathe the other side.

P.S. I didn't spend much time on Orientation Island, just bookmarked the portal for Tir. I figured if I'm going to fumble around and have an uncontrollable avatar (wenchlike or otherwise) I'd rather do it among my friends.

Familiarity breeds content... or something like that.

Firewall is a good area to investigate. The client software needs to talk to the SL servers.
http://secondlife.com/whatis/faq.php mentions this.

Second Life needs to connect to ports 443/TCP, 12035/UDP, 12036/UDP, and 13000-13050/UDP. You should configure your firewall to allow outbound traffic on those ports, and related inbound traffic.

Still can't get into the site. I keep getting the same message that the server is either down or there is some other problem. I have told the firewall to communicate with SL, so that shouldn't be an issue any longer. I checked the password and that's not the problem. I have to wonder if it's either something with my ISP speed or with my RAM. Any suggestions?

Top of pagePrevious messageNext messageBottom of pageLink to this message  By Accasbel on Friday, February 16, 2007 - 11:55 am:

I have heard that new accounts can have delays when logging in for the first time. There's a lot of database work in setting up a new avatar. I think they throttle the log-in rate.
That problem arose since they starting allowing free and unverified sign-ups.

SO:
- maybe try at different times of the day?
- or try downloading and reinstalling the latest client software?
- maybe email me a tech spec of your system? I'll try to see if there's something there.

Okay, I figured out what the problem was. My anti-hacker software was defeating me. I turned it off (leaving the anti-virus software on, of course), and voila, I was in. I have been to Orientation Island, transported elsewhere (inadvertently), and joined the Noggians. Now I am wandering through SL, searching for the location of the "People" for etc etc. So how do I transport to the locus of the Noggians? I was stuck in some weird place when I finally quit last night. Looked like some kind of land of adult entertainment. Before that I was in a place with Coke machines, candy machines and all kinds of other commercial stuff.

Okay, now I am at the Tir location. I left myself sitting by the pool, holding a Celtic sword and I haven't figured out how to put it back in the inventory. Where is everybody else? Will the other 4 persons in the Tir group show up as being inanimate wherever they happen to be or do we disappear when we log out?

Top of pagePrevious messageNext messageBottom of pageLink to this message  By Accasbel on Sunday, February 18, 2007 - 11:17 am:

Don't think of Tir in SL as a place where you sit and wait for something.

You can offer friendship to others. You will know when friends log in or out (if they permit that default). You can IM them anywhere and from anywhere in SL. You can IM someone, and if they are not online the message is either queued up for their return or sent to their email (without you knowing what the actual email is).

All an avatar knows about others is their name and SL profile. Although you can put RL information ans contact details in your profile, this is not the norm. People don't expect you to. It's not rude to refuse to tell anything other than your SL existence.

You can send a Teleport to ask friends to join you at some 'kewl' place. People can gather at a point from anywhere in SL in an instant.

So
SL and its Tir are WAY beyond a chat room.

It's a handy place for people to meet up in Avatar form and to 'show and tell' - have fun with rezzing or showing things found/bought.

Avatars disappear when they log out.
When you log in, the login screen has a dropdown to select where you will appear - Your last location, Your 'home' location, or a region name.

As for the sword -
Right-click on yourself, click 'take off' - and click carefully in company! LOL

Top of pagePrevious messageNext messageBottom of pageLink to this message  By Mcguire on Sunday, February 18, 2007 - 05:03 pm:

*L* I figured it out. I met up with Silk there last night and noticed her avatar can do different gestures than mine. I can only presume that those things are gathered along the way as you obtain more things for your inventory. I also noticed that she was flying higher than myself. We did hit a weird glitch though. While we were hanging out, looking towards the horizon, I walked into her and we both went through the rail and continued to seemingly walk in space. I had absolutely no control over the direction I moved, but could turn in circles, viewing what was in that direction. I could see her experiencing the same thing, although I was moving away from her pretty fast and she soon disappeared into the mist. I got many klicks away before I finally hit the teleport button back to Tir and that didn't work at all. I finally had to quit. When I started back up, I was back on the gallery, looking at that spiral structure. I also noticed that when standing in different places around the waterfall, some sort of programming code would pop up and eventually fade away. That happened several times during my stay. All in all, it's been quite an interesting experience getting to know this new world. The ability to shape face, eyes, hair colour, body shape, clothing, etc. is all pretty cool. I do realize that I need to go out and explore. I think it would be better to be a paying customer to gain some capital so that I can participate in the virtual economy. I need money to make money to help me obtain those items that would make this an even more exciting experience. I'm liking this SL better all the time.

There are episodes of bad 'Lag' (network and server overload) happening currently. Generally things are ok, but every one in a while you may indeed be out of control in mid-air :)

There's a lot to learn. Sounds like Silk really got herself sorted out in the incoming Islands. (AS per my *excellent!!!!!!!* advice. LOL!!

I've been dragged away from the Tir build. I'd better get back to it if people are starting to arrive. Looks like a building site at the moment. (Which of course , it is.)

Hello all you SL fans. So far, I have met up with Mick, Silk, Indie and her son, Ty at a particular Tir site. Mick was trying to get us to the Tir pub. I couldn't track and follow because he didn't have his map button clicked, but he did give me the map coordinates. I finally figured out how to use those coordinates to teleport to that location, but the last coordinate, the one for elevation was 594, unless I got the coordinate wrong. This proved to be an altitude higher than I could maintain using the flight control buttons (page up/down, etc.) The coordinates Mick gave were 106 159 594. Acc, do you have any advice on how to achieve and maintain such an altitude? Or do I have that coordinate wrong?

Top of pagePrevious messageNext messageBottom of pageLink to this message  By Mcguire on Saturday, February 24, 2007 - 11:40 pm:

Okay then. Nevermind on the questions, I got there. Not sure why I didn't make it the other times, but at any rate. Either there are glitches in the room or SL was acting up this afternoon, because sometimes when you started walking, you couldn't stop without having to teleport. When you'd sit on the couch, you'd actually be standing with your legs buried in the bench. Still a nice little space. The fireplace is nice and I'll let everybody else discover the second level for themselves *WEG*

Top of pagePrevious messageNext messageBottom of pageLink to this message  By Accasbel on Sunday, February 25, 2007 - 10:15 am:

Telports that you try to set yourself from the map generally don't allow you to get higher than 300m above ground.
If someone has found a nice place (or even a place) they can offer a TP to anyone in their Friends list. Highlight the person in the Friends list, and click on Teleport. The person will be offered the Tp from you - no matter where they are in-world. You can edit the message in the Teleport offer, or just explain via IM.
Way easier than telling them about coordinates - with the added advantage - that it works! LOL

Generally you get to public places at any altitude via Search.

If you find yourself somewhere you might want to visit again, click World / Create Landmark Here.
The LM pops up for some needless reason. Just close it. You'll find any landmarks you make or collect in the Landmarks section of your Inventory.
Click on any of them and choose Teleport.
- et Voila! Regardless of altitude or location.

If on your own, get a flight assist, like a Flight Feather, Flight Band ... They allow you to fly up as high as you want to go. You won't find anything above about 760 metres.

SL is having fits of "lag" (network and server loads causing delays and making it difficult at times to control you avvie's movements cleanly).
Was inworld for a short time last evening. Dreasful lag! Lost patience! :)
It will improve

Top of pagePrevious messageNext messageBottom of pageLink to this message  By Accasbel on Sunday, February 25, 2007 - 03:00 pm:

And Oh!
If you want to give a person a landmark, and they are not inworld at the time, you open their Profile and drag the Landmark from your inventory onto the "Drop Inventory Item Here" box.
They get a notification as soon as they log in. THe LM will be in their Inventory, and easily found via Recent Item tab.

Works also if they *are* inworld, of course.

If you can see someone, you can give them things simply by dragging from your inventory onto their avatar. Generally you are giving them a copy, not your only instance of it. However, the creator of whatever it is may have set non-permission on copying or transferring.

Top of pagePrevious messageNext messageBottom of pageLink to this message  By Accasbel on Sunday, February 25, 2007 - 03:14 pm:

Ditto sorts of thing for IM-ing.
If you send someone an IM, and they are not inworld, the message is either
1) stored so they get it when they next log in, or
2) send to their email address
- depending on their Preference settings.

If you get an email as a result of someone IM-ing you, you can reply to that email without logging in to SL. The reply is routed to that persons IM.
If they are not inworld, then .....

So you can communicate without both or either of you being inworld - and without having to know each other's email addy.
Good for preserving personal privacy.

Note that spam happens in SL. I get occasional invites to join groups I've never heard of, from someone I've never heard of.
Very low volume but it happens. They can be reported for abuse if you're bothered.

+ On privacy.
Lindens come down hard on harassment and bad behaviour. Bad as in deliberately causing upset to others. 'Bad' as in judgements about other forms of morality is not something they see as being their job to deal with for you.

Celt, you can do it man. There's a bit of a learning curve, but you can become competent enough in a week to function well enough to have a good time. I was at some club last night, dancing like I'll never be able to in the real world with some pretty good techno to dance to. I had a great time. I also picked up a bracelet in this place called A Touch Of Ireland, which gives me the ability to dance like Michael Flatley anyplace I happen to be. You can enhance your moves by backing up with the down arrow, which gives you a sort of moonwalk thing and flying up in the air with the page up/page down buttons, which makes Gene Kelly look like an amateur *LOL*. I got your IM while I was there, not sure if you got mine. Once you get off Orientation Island, you can catch up with Silk, Indie, Mick, or myself, we will give you the benefit of things we have learned. I see several of the other regs are in the Noggians group now too. I haven't seen Wunda inworld yet, but she's listed, so she can probably help too. I think once you get in and used to it, you'll enjoy it.

SL make money buy selling land and charging monthly maintenance.

They make money from Premium signups too, but land is where it's at.

The currency in SL is Linden Dollars L$.
It operates as a real currency, and is traded on the Linden Exchange. I understand that people also trade it in other places.
You can buy L$ in the Exchange. You can also convert surplus L$ to real US$ there.

Sounds like you have an "experienced / chronologically-gifted" PC there Celt.
SL is very demanding on the graphics system.
I'm getting away with the Intel chipset embedded in my very new motherboard.
Really needs a games-type graphics card to process the images.

AND/OR -
If your Net connection is slow, you're going to be in real trouble no matter how god your PC is. Broadband *that actually delivers at broadband speeds!!* is a must.

Anyway, even if your tech keeps you out of SL, the message board will still be going here.
Plus people can still use the Tir chat while they are in-world.

I'm also looking at ways to integrate the website with the SL side.

Top of pagePrevious messageNext messageBottom of pageLink to this message  By Accasbel on Monday, February 26, 2007 - 09:56 pm:

So what speeds are you*actually getting* on your broadband? - as opposed to what it's rated at.

How does your hardware line up against:
http://secondlife.com/corporate/sysreqs.php

For PC:
-------------------------------------------
* Internet Connection*: Cable or DSL
* Operating System: Windows XP (Service Pack 2)
o OR Windows 2000 (Service Pack 4)
* Computer Processor: 800MHz Pentium III or Athlon, or better
* Computer Memory: 256MB or better
* Video/Graphics Card**:
o nVidia GeForce 2, GeForce 4mx, or better
o OR ATI Radeon 8500, 9250, or better
-------------------------------------------------

Good broadband speed is the killer requirement.
The graphics part is important, but one can get away with less pokey graphics.
F'rinstance, the SL support docs bang on about Intel chips "are not suported" - BUT my Intel chips run it ok.

What's the full spec of your machine?

It's not so much the "newness" that matters, it's the graphics chipset.

Maybe you can email me?

If you know someone's SL name, you can search for them in People, pull up their profile, and drop inventory (including a landmark) on them, send an IM.
What you can't do, unless they are in your Friends list, is TP them. But you CAN send them a landmark.

Celt, there are things that might help, even with your current gear. Have a loog at
https://wiki.secondlife.com/wiki/Help:Lag

Good tips for reducing lag (Lag which you see as lots of grey stuff, and difficulty moving)

Top of pagePrevious messageNext messageBottom of pageLink to this message  By Accasbel on Tuesday, February 27, 2007 - 11:02 am:

Just having Silk flying and overshooting.. a few points.

When you press a key to move, the client software sends a message to the sim server telling what you've pressed (and for how long).
The sim server works out where you would have moved to and sends a message back to the client telling it where the avatar is 'now'.
The client then shows the avvie in the new position.

If you're having a bad case of lag, then the message takes 'too long' to get back.
The natural inclination is to keep beating that key until you see that you at wherever you want to be.
Problem is:- When the system catches up, you're way past where you wanted to be.
So, turn around, and beat that key like hell again! :)
And ......... so on ad infinitum.

I generally don't have a problem. Even though my PC only has Intel on-board graphics, it's a 3.3gHz with 1Mb memory and a fast disk. The broadband speed is also generally good.
BUT, sometimes lag is woeful. Then if I HAVE to move, it's always in a string little pushes, not a big long move.

To cover any distance, even if you can see the place you want to get to, flying is better than walking. I find it *way* easier to fly using Mouselook.

Again, anyone having big probs should try and digest
https://wiki.secondlife.com/wiki/Help:Lag

Cutting down on draw distance and graphics features will make the SL world seem *a lot* less beautiful, but at least you would be able to operate in it.

I was wandering around in SL, came across what looked to be an Hindu (Indian)Temple. Inside were all sorts of reliefs on the walls depicting scenes from the Kama Sutra. I noticed there were a couple of people on my HUD and they were ladies. To my surprise, they were engaged in what could most diplomatically be referred to as imitations of some of the scenes on the walls. When they discovered my presence, I was screamed at and told that this place was for females only. Wow, I didn't see any signage to indicate that there was no males allowed. Apparently I trangressed on somebody's inner sanctum sanctorum. I teleported out as quickly as I could, but not fast enough for these ladies as a female dressed in police attire appeared and began to threaten me. Yikes *LOL*

Acc, while you and I were talking at the waterfall earlier today, you began to type and a rock wall appeared. At that point, I was unable to move in any direction. All I could do was to look around. I wonder if you writing script had anything to do with my inability to move?

Generally,an organised place will give automatically give you a notecard or 'chat' to you on arrival at a landing place. If you wander in from over the sea, it's possible that you would miss that.
I can understand that Lesbian groups would be ready to shoot on sight. Guys can be very obnoxious online. There are guys who "have issues" with women who won't instantly have cyber with them :) I'd say that they would be unbearable when faced with card-carrying Lesbians. - who probably look gorgeous and in that sort of place maybe dressed for warm weather!
Places of all sorts have security teams that are well able to deal with 'griefers'.
If you had stayed to 'talk' to them, you'd almost definitely found youself being bounced all over the sim, before being shot up into space! LOL!

SL isn't 'a game' where the others in it are computer generated. Respect for people and their beliefs / customs / preferences is required.

When you and I were tlking Mac, the sim appeared to crash. I had to relog.
The fact that I had started to build something to illustrate the topic of our chat was coincidence. The sim host machine has crashed a few times recently.

Having made a few mistakes since playing with the SL options, I have a couple of notes about wearing your 'shape', 'skin' and 'clothing' in SL.

I have found it advantageous, once you have edited your appearance to satisfaction, to save the shape (which includes most body parts such as head, torso, legs, face shape)as a new file, perhaps naming as yourself with some sort of identification as to what the dress code is. For example...

Silk Daytime casual
Silk Daytime professional
Silk Evening dining
Silk Evening party
Silk Naked *L*

That way, you can simply drag and drop your chosen attire including your make up etc onto yourself, without having to go alter appearance each time.

You can also be quite specific and while in edit mode, select for example, make up (under face heading) and create several different styles of 'look', again naming them for retrival ease;

Silk Day light make up
Silk Day business make up
Silk Night dining make up
Silk Night rave make up

You can also be specific with your clothing as you alter it, making up an entire wardrobe of designs you particularly enjoy.

Along the way you also have opportunities to purchase new shapes, clothing, etc and add to your inventory.

Another thing to watch for is when you are trying to change some aspect of your attire or look and cannot seem to alter an item, go to inventory to check whether it is marked as "worn", as you may need to remove it before other changes can take place.

Am I right Acc? :)

Good stuff Silk!

Starting at the end.... :)

SL clothing and accessories are confusing at first. That's mainly because an avatar's appearance can be generated by a combination of settings in "Change Appearance" and objects that are 'worn'.

Now follows additional confusion caused by me trying to explain that it's not really confusing ... *sigh* :-
The good news is that much grief can be avoided by folowing Silk's suggestion :)

Taking everything off can involve two sections of the 'pie' that appears when you right-click your avvie.

1. Take-Off - to either/or
Take off 'Clothes' from various parts of your body
or
'Detach' items from various parts.

2. Appearance - to remove/change items that are controlled by the checkboxes and sliders.

You could have a jacket that is an object, but a shirt that is slider-controlled.
Note that the sections of clothing in Appearance are best though of as layers, and not as their labels.

See Simple! LOL!

Anyway, to build on what Silk posted above.

If you drag an outfit folder from inventory onto your avatar, then any items in that will replace the matching location items already on you. You don't have to take stuff off in order to put stuff on.

You make those Inventory 'Clothing' outfits in 'Appearance'.
A word of warning: Once you have stuff like prim hair (as opposed to slider-generated hair) I've found it best to set checkboxes so that everything is included in the outfit created. Otherwise you may find that draking an outfit onto your avies leaves it dressead as you intended, but bald :)

This is getting too long. I'll stop now!

Just in case:---

Let nobody panic if they notice some big changes :)

I've decided to rearrange the SL Tir so it works on the plots that I have, and in that ever-changing neighbourhood :)

There will be an Inn in the sky at 250 metres. That altitude allows TPs into it by anyone.
It will be on a platform located over the 32mx32m square area.

Tacked on to that on the same will be the smaller 16mx32m platform as a shop for people to sell things.
The 16x32 plot (and therefore anything on platforms above that) will allow you to rezz objects.
I'll make a series of 16x32 platforms above that for people to use as sandboxes, so the 'shop' area will be clean for finished work.

SO:-
1. The big block at 150 metres (with the waterfall) is disappearing - apart from a temporary platform to receive anyone who has that location as their Tir home/destination.

2. The ground plot will become a garden

3. The 'Inn' in the skybox up at 600 metres will migrate down to the platform at 250 metres.

See, totally clear!
The Inn and shop at 250 metres.
A garden/wood on the ground.
Some sandbox platforms at 300 metres and above.

Eh? Wa?

Just in case people are having problems since SL put up a new client version yesterday.
(Even with previous versions) Many issues are solved by updating your PC's graphics drivers.

SL have posted a special for the new versions at:
http://secondlife.com/knowledgebase/article.php?id=443

Which reads:

Resolving issues with Second Life 1.14
Having problems?

If you are experiencing issues specific to this viewer version, please report them here on the blog; include your location in-world (for specific rendering issues) and system details from Help > About.
http://blog.secondlife.com/2007/03/27/second-life-1140-viewer-released/

If you crash before you reach the login screen
(This is generally seen with notebooks that have ATI X300 or X600 graphics cards)

* Right click your Second Life icon, choose Properties.
* In the Target field, add a space, then -noaudio to the end of the line after the quotation mark.
* eg. "C:\Program Files\SecondLife\SecondLife.exe" -noaudio

Disable VBO
* Go to Edit menu > Preferences > Adv. Graphics tab
* Turn off Enable OpenGL Vertex Buffer Objects option

Turn off Avatar Vertex Program
* Go to Edit menu > Preferences > Graphics Detail tab
* Turn off Avatar Vertex Program option

Get the Latest Drivers
* ATI - http://ati.amd.com/support/driver.html
* nVidia - http://www.nvidia.com/content/drivers/drivers.asp
