Top of pagePrevious messageNext messageBottom of pageLink to this message  By Tecumseh on Sunday, May 9, 1999 - 03:19 am:

hey this is suppoosed to be Irish sports but I guess its okay cause its the playoffs. Power failure at Boston Gardens, Boston vs Edmonton. Flu epidemic 191?. I guess there could be another I don't know of so I will guess three times the flu epidemic was a cancelation not a postponement but I'm counting it anyhow.

3 is right I'm email to see if 4 is correct like I believe because of Colorando . You guessed 3 but your written answer was WRONG WRONG
here is the correct answer

Playoff Postponements
The assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. forced the postponement of three series games
during the quarterfinal rounds of the 1968 Stanley Cup playoffs. Match-ups between the New
York Rangers and Chicago Blackhawks, St. Louis Blues and Philadelphia Flyers, and
Minnesota North Stars and Los Angeles Kings were delayed by a minimum of two days.

Nine challenges, some at mid-season and some
at the season's end, were thrown against the fabulous
Silver Seven. All were repulsed, but none will ever match
the one presented in 1905 by a team from Dawson City
in the Yukon Territory. Such was the enthusiasm of the
Yukon team, that the players themselves bankrolled part
of the 4,400-mile trip out of their own pockets, hoping to
regain the $3,000 cost from gate receipts. The trip has
become a fantastic legend in Cup history.

Okay, here goes: Tec, the 1st all star game, I believe, was in Toronto in 1947 between NHL allstars & the Maple Leafs. Why it was played I don't have a clue. For charity, maybe?

Caoilte: Your 1st question has a quirk in it: In 1918 the Toronto Arenas won the 1st Stanley Cup. However, if you count when the NHL assumed control of Stanley Cup competition the answer would be the Ottawa Senators in 1927. In answer to your 2nd one, it was Canada in 1924.

Shamrock It wasn't too hard for me I was looking for the exact date and I don't think Tec is right making fun of Detroit . The All Star game was in
Boston and because of Bobby Orr being truly a Canadian to prove we are the BEST.

Shamrock player wons won the most stanley cups
Larry Robertson with 6 between 73-92 as a Montreal
Canadiens.*fingers crossed*

Henri Richard has 11 stanley cup victories, the first team to win the the Stanley cup was the Montreal AAA the yaer would be 189? I think. To add to pegs story of The Dawson City Klondikers, they left Dawson City by by dogsled travelling 30-40 miles a day, the temperture dipped to minus 20 F. They missed the boat connection by two hours and had to wait 5 days for another one. They then travelled by train to Ottawa where they played the next day.At least two records were set during the series, the goalie for Dawson was 17 years old and is the youngest player to play in the finals, One eyed Frank Mcgee playing for Ottawa scored an alot of goals in the second game( somewhere in the double digits) including 8 in a row.

Finally I get to answer its hard to keep all this
info and not tell anyone ........the octipi history as cut and pasted by pegs *S*
I hope copy right doesn't apply but I type lousy
*L*

The History Of the Octopus

There are no better traditions in sports than in the game of hockey.
One such tradition is the throwing of octopi onto the ice at Red
Wings games. Here is the history...

The octopus first made it's appearance on April 15, 1952, during the
Red Wings' Stanley Cup playoff run.

Two Detroit brothers, Pete and Jerry Cusimano, who owned a
fishmongers in the Eastern Market, threw one on the ice at Olympia Stadium. Each tentacle of
the octopus was symbolic of a win in the playoffs. Back then, the NHL consisted of just the
origional six teams, and eight wins (two best-of-seven series) were needed to win the Stanley
Cup. The Red Wings swept the series that year, and the Octopus has come to be the good luck
charm ever since.

The tradition carried over to Joe Louis Arena on opening night in 1979 when several of the
cepholopods found their way onto the ice.

During the 1995 playoffs, Bob Dubisky and Larry Shotwell, co-workers at a meat and seafood
retail company near Detroit, tossed a 38-pound octopus onto the ice during the National Anthem
prior to Game 1 of the Western Conference Finals. The year after, the duo struck again with a
50-pounder in the Conference Finals. Although the feat received no air time on the nationally
broadcast game, the octopus was proudly displayed on the hood of the Zamboni between
periods.

Yesterday,Feb.19th.2000, Ireland beat Scotland 44 points to 22, in six nations rugby.. this was the highest points total scored by Ireland in any game, in six( five) nation competition.

Question: What was the previous highest points Ireland had scored against Scotland ?

Assuming you still mean in that competition, and believing the previous high against anyone to be 30 I'll guess 26. (scores go in 3s and 7s I hope *L*)

IRELAND BANISH FRENCH DEMONS

Ireland Celebrate ...
Ireland have defeated France for the first time in 17 years and for the first time in France since 1971. An excellent performance from Brian O'Driscoll earned him an unbelievable 3 tries as the French could only manage one. The final score in a heart-stopping affair was 27 to 25. O'Driscoll's final try and the conversion by Humphries put Ireland within a point and a final pressure kick from Humphreys,(on for O'Gara), sealed the victory.
