Tír na nÓg
[the] Land of [the] Young
Tír - as in 'tier' (of a cake), or 'tear' (that you weep)
na - as in 'ba-na-na'
nÓg - with a long o , as 'O say can you see'
You may hear people pronounce it incorrectly as something like
Tir naw nog (as in egg-nog).
The problem for them might be the accent (fada) on the 'i' and 'O'. The fada makes the sound longer. í sounds like 'e'

Anybody familiar with the parish accents in Cork City would assume that with "Tur", you lived in Montenotte. The area has peculiar way of pronouncing words with an 'r'.
In recent years, the pure Montenotte accent has been diluted by incoming flat-dwellers (flat = 'apartment').
The Rochestown area is reputed to have preserved elements of the accent however.
Q. What is a 'creche'?
A. It's a car-accident in Rochestown.

That is what we need desperately, a pronunciation gazette. although I am fair at writing gaeilge, I have little idea how to pronounce most of the words I write. I have to rely on ancient memories of the older folk in my family and how they said things.
