I wonder can anyone help me, I'm looking for works by the nineteenth century translator Kuno Meyer and wonder if there are any modern versions of his work available. If anyone knows I'd be grateful if you could post up some information.

Meyer's "Death Tales of the Ulster Heroes" and "Fianaigecht" (poems about Finn and the Fiana) are available from the Dublin Institute for Advanced Studies (www.dias.ie). Most of his other translations are long out of print but I found some at www.abebooks.com

Will check those references out. I know he did a lot of stuff for old periodicals like the Revue Celtique - do you know is that an english language magazine or is it all in French? New at all this scholarly stuff.*smile*

I think most articles were in French or German. Meyer was German and wrote much more in that language than in English. If you're interested in finding translations of Irish texts by other authors, the DIAS has quite a few and there is also the Irish Texts Society. Many of their publications have the Irish version on one page and the English translation on the facing page.

I have checked out all those references, I knew the C.E.L.T site already (great venture) but did not realise there was so much Kuno Meyer stuff on it. It is all in Ancient Irish but I have an english version of The Colloquy between Fintan and the Hawk of Achill - which is a translation done by Caitlín Matthews in 'The Encyclopaedia of Celtic Wisdom.' So now I have access to the Irish version.
I am beginning to get the gist of a lot of the old irish texts just by comparing the texts and the english translation. So many words have not changed much over the centuries too. I will try get a dictionary of old irish and see if I can do my own translations!

Hilary, Rudolf Thurneysen produced a couple of books on Old Irish in the early 1900s - "A Grammar of Old Irish," and "Old Irish Reader." They've been reprinted a couple of times but are still hard to find. I think I can get a copy of "O-I Reader" if you're interested. If you want to be really adventurous, you could try translating from some of the original manuscripts. You can see them at http://www.isos.dcu.ie/home.html

Hi Shae, Checked out the isos site but you need to register with them to view. so that put me off as it isnt even online reg. need to write in to them. I am not that adventurous yet though some titles looked really interesting. Medb leth derg was that the legendary Medb in the Tain theres a mss. about her. I would be interested in getting an old irish reader, I will check out the local library too.

Medb Leth Derg (half Red) was goddess of the sovereignty of Tara and wife of Art mac Cuinn. Medb in the Táin was probably a later literary reincarnation of her.
I'll see if I can get Thurneysen on Saturday. I won't be near the bookshop that might have it until then.
